Today is my 37th birthday. Of course, the kids didn't remember and JJ barely remembered to say something to them at dinner. He left a card for me on the kitchen table. That was it for birthday gifts. I suppose I am lucky he remembered, really.
I drug through the day. Tried to scrapbook, but didn't get far. I did laundry and replaced IC's seat on his bike, but that was the most I accomplished besides making meals.
Bouncing B showed in the yard after dinner, so the kids were entertained for the afternoon.
I am recovering slowly. My head hurts on and off, but it's not severe, just achy. My neck is less stiff and sore, but not back to normal. The swelling is WAY down on my stapled area, but that's still sore, making it hard to sleep comfortably at night (can't sleep on my back, which drives me batty). I'm still tired on and off, so I'm taking it slow, though I think JJ's getting a little impatient with me.
Hmm-he's been crabbing about his cold for a week now, I think if HE'D have the concussion, he'd be slow like I am!

Long Week
It's been a long week. Other than taking kids to school and home, I kept a fairly low key for activities. Wednesday, I purposely did nothing. Thursday, I felt better, so I some laundry and some Sunday School room preparation for S.S. in September.
Friday, I did 1/2 of my walk and was wore out the rest of the day. Friday nite I had to take E to a swimming birthday party-of course, that was the day it decided to be chilly (it'd been in the 80s and 90s all week until then). They had the party anyway and after 20 min, E was done. That was fine with me. She still had a good time.

The School Honeymoon is Over
So, by Thursday of this week, the first week of school, the school honeymoon was over.
At least, for IC.
Complaints about practicing guitar and doing homework abounded.
Ugh.
I have to come up with an incentive for him or it's going to be a long year.
At least, Miss A isn't fussing yet about homework.
All in good time, I'm sure.

Quote for Today
The 4 yr old just asked me for the glue bottle-I asked what do you need it for-
"because I'm going to make something awesome!" Hopefully, "awesome" doesn't include getting glue everywhere! :)

Back to Work & An ER Visit
Monday morning I got a call to work at the school, which I reluctantly said yes to. I ended up saying yes to working the rest of the week for a para who's father was not doing well and wasn't expected to make it.
So, I worked Tuesday as usual. I picked up E at my MIL's and got a call from my mom that she had influenza, so then I made arrangements for my MIL to have her the rest of the week.
We went to York to IC's first guitar lesson with his new teacher, stopped at Walmart (well, duh) and Wendy's to eat before heading home.
The girls got to play with Bouncing B, she's been showing up a lot lately in the yard after 6 pm, while the men we silage chopping. Tuesday was their 2nd day of it and they did finish then in the evening.
I went and fed the feeder calves for JJ, having IC help me take buckets on the 4-wheeler, since I am not good at driving the tractor. This means we make 2 trips, as there are 12 buckets to feed.
AFter that, I did my usual of late, which is shooing the cows into their pen and opening another gate so that he can drive the tractor and feed wagon in to feed the cows.
This is where things got messed up for the rest of the week. I've been doing this for weeks, mind you, and have done it so often in the past, it's not a big deal.
Until . . . .
My hands slipped off the gate latch and I lost my balance and fell backwards, hitting the cement feed bunk behind me with the back left side of my head. I was dizzy and hands tingled at first. It took me a few minutes to recover. Unfortunately, IC was right there and I scared the boy to death. Then, he really started crying when I started bleeding.
I kept calm, had him and Miss A go get JJ. We decided to go to the ER and no, I wasn't about to call the ambulance! I walked back to the house, had the kids change into cleaner clothes, since they were filthy from being outside, and waited for JJ to dump his last load of silage (good thing I wasn't dying, by the way) and get cleaner clothes also so he could drive me to the hospital.
It was over an hour there. JJ and the kids fared fine in the waiting room while I waited FOREVER for the PA and nurse to stitch me up. They were busy, I guess, but yikes, it took a ridiculous amount of time.
After a diagnosis of a concussion and 9 staples later, I finally went home. I got the kids showered and put to bed by 10, which was super-late for them. I had to call the secretary and tell her I wouldn't be able to work the rest of the week, which was a little disappointing and a little good, as I hadn't been all that eager to work all week.
After I cleaned up, it took me awhile to relax enough to go to bed and then I had a hard time getting comfy. I will be stiff and sore for awhile.

Surprise Visit
Saturday night, around 10:30pm, we got a knock at our front door. JJ heard it and went to answer it. Apparently, one of the boys from the boys' home that is located about 3 1/2 miles down the road walked away from the home.
He came to our house, asking to call the police because he didn't want to go back to the home after a disagreement occurred. At least, he seemed like a good kid, despite his rough life of having no family and running away from multiple foster homes, which is why he was at the boys' home.
JJ talked to him on the porch until the deputy on duty came and picked him up.
After that, we both had trouble getting to sleep-it was quite an interesting night!

Opening Fields
Saturday, I took the kids and my mom to Grand Island to take State Fair entries and get a few things. It rained in town, and I missed my turn, causing me to do a little extra driving to get to the fairgrounds, but it wasn't bad.
After that, we headed to Kohl's and I got the kids some things, but nothing for me, which I hoped to do. Ah well. After eating, we headed to Hastings to stop at Walmart for a couple of things before heading home.
We got home at 1:45, just in time for the kids to get a ride with my dad, who came to open the field for JJ to silage chop.
The kids were gone about an hour and then they played in the yard awhile, so it was a good way to end a near-stressful time shopping.

Working and Guitar Teachers
Believe it or not, I actually had to work Thursday morning in TYKE. It went pretty well, except when the boy I was in charge of took off on me! Luckily, he went back to the room, but not a great way to start my year. I also had to work in SUCCESS for an hour after TYKE was done to feed one of the students (whom I took care of a lot last year, so it was old hat for that).
Thursday was also our last day with our local guitar teacher, Jason. He and his family are moving to Grand Island. IC really liked him-they always had enough time to talk about Legos or Star Wars during their lessons together. Next week, IC is going to York for his first guitar lesson with his new teacher, Tim. I hope this teacher is as good as his first teacher.

Quote of the Day
IC comes home from his first full day of school on Thursday and told me that "3rd grade is complicated!"
This, by the way, is a good thing. Keeping IC busy is what keeps him from getting into trouble. Mostly, he thrives on busy learning. 1st and 2nd grade had a lot of slow time for him, so I am hoping that 3rd grade will keep that mind of his occupied. Even after he said that 3rd grade was complicated, he was smiling and telling me all about the things that they did during the day. It's a much-improvement over last year.
Miss A, by the way, was also happy with 1st grade, but also told me she had a stick pulled. Ugh-I hope that isn't the normal for the whole year. I've worked with her teacher as a para and she was happy I was signing up to help in class. I hope my middle child isn't going to strain that relationship.
Although E bunny told me she's been in time out twice so far, the teacher hasn't mentioned anything. So, I am not sure what's going on there. I told E bunny she needs to be good in school, so we will see what my strong-willed third child actually does as time goes on. I'm not sure if she's telling things correctly or not. Since I already have a regular conference with her teacher on Monday, we'll see what she says.
I have already seen how busy I will be this year keeping track of 2 children with homework. Just wait until next year when all 3 are bringing home assignments!

First Day of School!
Wednesday dawned bright and early as the kids were actually still excited to head back to school
Here is something very cute that the TYKE teachers did in E bunny's class for the first day. What a great momento!
Here is Little Miss waiting in line to go home. She had a good day.
Here was Little Miss waiting for the big kids to come home. She's rather lost without them around. She doesn't always play with the big kids, but she's used to their "noise."
Here come the big kids off the school bus. They were happy to be home and had a good day at school.

School Open House
Tuesday, the 14th, was open house at the school in the evening. We got there a little before 5 pm and was out in about 45 minutes. Not bad, since I had 3 different rooms to go in, plus stopping in 2 others from the year before to drop off some paperwork that we did over the summer.
First stop was IC's room. He'd not been too excited to head back to school until he met with his teacher and she talked about all the things they'd be working on.
Next, we headed to Miss A's class. She's been excited all summer to go back to school.
Finally, we stopped in E bunny's class. She's also been excited to go to school. This is her LAST year in preschool.
It just seems like a few days ago that the kids got out of school, but here they are, ready to go again!

Lincoln and Roller Skating
So, Sunday I happen to have a 2nd solo at church. Since my music just wasn't working with me, I sang it a capella. It worked fine. We spent the afternoon lazing around for awhile before doing chores and so on. It was a good day.
Monday dawned bright and the kids and I headed to Lincoln again. This time, we picked up our ceramics, got me a couple of pairs of shoes-one for work and one for snowy days, stopped at the mall to eat, and went to JoAnn Fabric nearby the mall to get some needed sewing supplies. After that, the kids wanted to go roller skating again. We stayed 1 1/2 hours and E bunny didn't have as much fun as she did a few days before, but the kids still had some fun.

Last Day of the Week
Today is Saturday. School is just a few days away. This morning, the girls went outside and got to go with Daddy to town for a couple of errands-they were thrilled and it was nice that they didn't fight all morning. After dinner, it was IC's turn to go with Daddy to work. I'm still working on sewing projects and laundry, but took time to work on this blog and do a little work outside. This evening, I am taking the kids to the movie Ice Age 4 in town-they haven't been to a movie for awhile, so they are pretty excited to go.
Stay Home Day
We stayed home ALL DAY on Friday. I worked at washing dishes and laundry, sewing on some sewing projects and IC helped with the painting of the wash house. I finally finished the wash house. It looks nice, but it took a lot of work for such a little building.
Pool Party
The kids were invited to a pool birthday party in the evening, so we spent as much of the day at home as we could.
At 6:30, we headed back to town after being there at 4 for my back appointment and 4:30 IC had a guitar lesson. Even though the day was cooler than it had been for quite awhile, the kids had a blast playing with their friends at the party. The party was for both of the pastor's younger girls, who are the same age as IC and Miss A. After 2 hours, the kids weren't ready to go home, but the party was over, and the parents were ready!

Hastings and Grand Island
Wednesday, the 8th, I took the kids in the van again. First, we stopped in town so IC could deposit his first county fair check in his savings and checking accounts. It was quite a good sum of money, but he realized how quickly it goes when you have to pay bills for feed and so on.
The next place we headed to was Hastings to get IC's cub scout neckerchief and slide and hat for Bears for this year.
After that, it was time to head to Grand Island. First, we stopped at Hobby Lobby-I love that store. It's probably a good thing there isn't one close by! We got some scrapping, sewing and rocket supplies. Then, we decided to eat. After a lengthy "discussion" we happened upon Valentino's, which beat out fast food in my opinion.
Since we had a little time before the kids' "surprise," we got a couple things taken care of for Miss A's Girl Scout stuff at their GI office, stopped at a book store (which took awhile), and sat at the mall for a short 1/2 hour.
At 2pm, I finally got to take the kids to Skate Island for some roller skating fun and since they were only open 2 hours in the afternoon, we stayed until they closed. The kids had a great time and weren't ready to leave.
After rollerskating, we headed home. Before we left town, IC was asking when we could go skating again! We made a quick stop at Walmart in Hastings on the way home to get some groceries and button batteries before making it home to have supper and play for a little bit outside.

Slip and Slide
Tuesday, we were home. I worked on painting the wash house after the kids had a little fun with the slip and slide. They hadn't done it for quite awhile and IC's nearly too big for it (it's a little one), but the kids had fun. They played with some water balloons before soaping up for the slide. They had a pretty good time.
Ceramic Painting
After dinner at the zoo, it was time to head to do some shoe shopping for school. After striking out at one store, we scored fairly well at Famous Footwear. After trying 8 pairs of shoes on, IC FINALLY decided on a pair. By the time he'd tried all those shoes on, I had new shoes for the girls, which also took some time!
After that, we headed to Paint Yourself Silly for the 2nd fun part of the day-painting a ceramic piece. This has become a yearly tradition to do right before we go back to school and the kids really like it.
After that, we headed to Target to find the kids pencil boxes (the ones in Walmart were awful) and E bunny a back pack. After that, we were getting pretty tired, so we headed home. We were home by 6 ish and spent the evening playing outside and recovering from our day. It was a pretty good day.

Lincoln Fun
Monday, the 6th, the kids and I headed in the morning to Lincoln. Our first stop was a surprise for the kids. They were thrilled when they realized I was taking them to the Children's Zoo. We spent the rest of the morning looking at the animals and seeing the improvements they'd done since we were there last year.
The Last Week Before School
It's the last week before school starts again. Hard to believe it's time for school to get going again. We've hardly had a summer, except for the scorching temps and dry weather have said otherwise. The plan was a do a few fun things with the kids, since we really hadn't had time to do much this summer, so I added fun activities with some other necessities that needed to be done.
Fishing
We hardly went fishing this year, so we took a chance on Sunday afternoon and went. It was a little warm, but not as awful as the past several weeks have been.
We went to Swan Lake, but struck out. After we came home, I stayed while the kids and JJ went to town to the Boys' Pond. They had more luck there, but they still didn't bring anything home for eating.
